Surname: taylor, boykin

If anyone has any information on Cap Taylor, b. 1857 or earlier and his wife, Bessie or Bettie
Boykin, b. 1860 or earlier, please contact me. Cap's real name may have been Wesbury or Wesberry. Around 1888, these two and their four children at that time(Laura, Peter Hamilton, Kate and Ella) left Camden, SC and settled in Alapaha(Berrien County), GA. Cap died in 1934 and his wife died in 1928.

James Taylor the Elder, born February 12, 1610, of Carlisle, England, died April 30, 1698, in Caroline County, Virginia, married about 1666, Francis Walker, born in 1610, died in 1680, daughter of Thomas Walker. James Taylor emigrated to America in 1635 on the "Truelove." They had the following children:


1. James Taylor, born December 27, 1668, in Orange County, VA., died in infancy.

2. Jane Taylor, born December 27, 1668, a twin, in Orange County, VA., died in infancy.

3. James Taylor II, born March 14, 1674. Lived in Caroline County, VA. See below.

4. Sarah Taylor, June 30, 1676, in Orange County, VA.

5. Martha Taylor, born about 1670, in Orange County, VA.


2. James Taylor II, born March 14, 1674, died June 23, 1729, lived in Caroline County, Virginia and King's and Queen's County, Virginia, married February 23, 1699, (1) Martha Thompson. The following children resulted from the first marriage:


1. Frances Taylor, born August 30, 1700, died November 25, 1761, married August 24, 1721, Ambrose Madison, a planter, son of John Madison and Isabella Minor Todd, died August 27, 1732. They had the following children:


1. James Madison, a planter, born March 27, 1723, died February 27, 1801, married Nelly R. Conway, daughter of Francis Conway, son of Edwin Conway and Elizabeth Thornton, and his wife Rebecca Catlett, daughter of John Catlett.


1. James Madison, married Mrs. Dorothy Paine Todd. James Madison was the 4th President of the United States. He was born March 16, 1751, at Port Conway, on the Rappahannock River, in Virginia. He died June 28, 1836, at Montpelier, VA.

2. Francis Madison, born June 18, 1753, died April 5, 1800.

3. Ambrose Madison, born January 27, 1755, died October 3, 1793.

4. Catlett Madison, born February 10, 1758, died March 18, 1758.

5. Nelly Madison, February 14, 1760, died February 11, 1829.

6. William Madison, born May 1, 1762.

7. Sarah Madison, born August 17, 1764.

8. Elizabeth Madison, born February 19, 1768, died May 17, 1775.

4. Zachary Taylor, born April 17, 1707, died in 1768, married Elizabeth Lee. They had a son, Richard.


1. Richard Taylor, died January 29, 1829, married Sarah Dabney Strother. He was a Colonel of a Virginia regiment in the Revolutionary War and removed to Kentucky in 1785, where he purchased a large plantation near Louisville and became an influential citizen; he was a member of the convention that framed the Constitution of Kentucky; served in both branches of the legislature; was Collector of the port of Louisville under President George Washington; as a Presidential elector, voted for Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, and Clay. He died January 19, 1829. They had two sons as follows:


1. Hancock Taylor, the eldest son.

2. Zachary Taylor was born September 24, 1784, in Orange County, Virginia, died July 9, 1850, married _____ Smith. Zachary Taylor remained on his father's plantation until 1808, in which year (May 3) he was appointed First Lieutenant in the 7th Infantry, to fill a vacancy occasioned by the death of his older brother, Hancock. Up to this point he had received but a limited education. [Copy from reproduced material from "Presidents of the United States", as collected by Bobbye Miniard.] He fought in the Indian Wars all over the United States. He commanded troops in Corpus Christi, TX. and later in Mexico against General Santa Anna. He was in possession of the Rio Grande Valley until November 1847. He was nominated by the Whig Party for President in June 7, 1848. Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States, from 1849 to 1850. They had two daughter, one married Colonel W. W. S. Bliss, Adjutant-General for President Taylor, as well as the Chief of Staff in Florida and Mexico, and also his Private Secretary during the presidency; the other, Sarah Knox Taylor, married in 1833, Jefferson Davis, born in 1808, in Christian (now Todd), Kentucky, died in 1889. Jefferson Davis was the President of the Southern Confederacy.


5. Tabitha Taylor, born March 2, 1713, married Thomas Wild.

6. Erasmus Taylor, born September 5, 1715, died December 1794, married October 13, 1749, Jane Moore.

7. Hannah Taylor, born March 15, 1718, married Nicholas Battaile.

8. Milley Taylor, born December 11, 1724, married Richard Thomas.

James Taylor II., married (2) Mary Gregory, born in 1665, died after 1745, daughter of John Gregory, of old Rappohannock County (now Essex County, Virginia), probably married several times. In January 1674, the name of his wife was Elizabeth. Mary had two brothers: John Gregory, Jr. and Richard Gregory; and a sister, Elizabeth Gregory, who married Thomas Wheeler. (Ref: "Winston and Allied Families," pp. 237-242, also see notes prepared by Bobbye Miniard). Mary Gregory married (2) Rowland Thomas of Caroline County, Virginia. To this second marriage of James Taylor II., the following children were born:

1. Anne Taylor, born January 12, 1685, married about 1704, Edward Eastman.

2. Elizabeth Taylor, born January 12, 1685, died in infancy.

3. Mary Taylor, born January 21, 1686, died in infancy.

4. Mary Bishop Taylor, born June 29, 1688, died in 1770, married (1) Henry Pendleton, and (2) Edward Watkins.

5. Edmund Taylor, born July 5, 1690, married Sarah Brooking

7. Elizabeth Taylor, born June 10, 1694.

2. John Taylor, born November 18, 1696, died March 22, 1780, in Granville. North Carolina, married February 14, 1716, Catherine Pendleton, born December 8, 1699, died July 26, 1774, daughter of Phillip Pendleton and his wife, Isabella Hurt. They had the following children (from Bobbye Jo Miniard's records):


1. Mary (Elizabeth?) Taylor, born May 30, 1718, died September 22, 1757, married February 3, 1735, Joseph Penn. See continuation of this lineage under the Penn Line.

2. Catherine Taylor, born December 30, 1719, died November 4, 1774, married July 4, 1739, Moses Penn. They had a son, John Penn, who married Susannah Lynne. He was the signer of the Declaration of Independence from the Virginia Colony.

3. Ann Taylor, born May 10, 1721, died August 10, 1761. Marriage status unknown.

5. Isabella Taylor, born June 26, 1725, married January 25, 1750, Samuel Hopkins.

6. John Taylor, born July 17, 1727, died October 26, 1787, married Betsy Lynn.

8. Philip Taylor, born February 17, 1732, died September 7, 1765, married Mary Walker.

9. Elizabeth Taylor, born July 9, 1735, married (1) James Lewis, and (2) William Bullock.

10. William Taylor, born December 19, 1735, died November 5, 1803, married July 28, 1763, Elizabeth Anderson.

11. Joseph Taylor, born February 19, 1742, married Frances Anderson.

I have some Iveys. John and Nancy Lindsey Ivey had 4 children William C. Ivey who was born abt. 1821. Jane Ivey 5-7-1823 (She died single) Counsel Ivey who was born abt. 1825 married Mary? Hester Ann Ivey born 4-1826-28 married Cader Hancock. These Children were born after John Died. RobertIvey born abt. 1833 married Elizabeth? Malinda Ivey Died Single. Ashley Ivey born abt 1839 Married Elizabeth Morris. and Either a Sion H. Pike or Joseph Ivey. I'm not sure about the last two children. Your Joseph could be a child of some of these Ivey's if the dates fit.

John Ivey was born abt. 1792 in Effingham Co. (State unknown) His Father may have been William Ivey. He Married Nancy Lindsey abt. 1820. John died abt. 1828 (in Montgomery Co.??) They had Four Children:

Was a farmer. Enlisted as a private on 15 May 1862, (CSA ?). Wounded in the left hand at Chicahoming, VA on 27 Jun. 1862. The hand was amputated. He was discharged 17 July 1862.
